We both started playing in the SCA in 1992. At that time we were in the Barony of
Madrone, the Kingdom of An Tir. At this point we were truly newbies at the game.
Keith took up Archery and excelled over the first 3 years at this martial skill.
He was eventually (loosely) recognized as a Master Bowman. And now for the secret
to the SCA - if you don't get a membership in the SCA your scores are never saved!
Our introduction to life in the SCA, An Tir style, was an introduction to the households
of An Tir. It turns out, to the untrained eye, to be a very political system where
all things are household run and household decided. Because of this perception,
Kittery and I stayed away from Courts, we stayed away from indoor events and feasts
and we steered clear of getting to know anyone with a circlet or "hat". Because of this
decision we missed out on a lot of the richness the SCA has to offer. For the first 2 years we lived near Sea-Tac airport, ran unofficial archery practices in the backyard on the tennis court and genrally had fun. We made friends with people like Papa Thor, Pegleg and other merchant minded folk. During our last year actively playing in An Tir we lived in Redmond, just off Avondale Rd. Our leaving the SCA had to do with my wife being called into court for the first time, being told to kneel in front of the Queen and getting her arse reemed for nearly 45 minutes for an action someone in Clan Blackmoor had done. Turns out that everyone pointed to Kittery when asked "who runs this household?" Kittery was the only married woman in the household so was "the Matron". The household actually started on the SciFi Convention circuit and the actual head never went to SCA events. We were never members of the household, just friends with most of them. <sigh />
